Talkie AI Review: Hands-On Testing, Memory & Steerability, Notable Failures
Talkie AI provides a reasonably polished interface offering a clean, safe platform that is carefully monitored to exclude NSFW content. Steerability and recall features are strong, but two of our three conversations were derailed by genuinely confounding outputs.
- Best for: Users who want safe-for-work content
- Not ideal for: Anyone who wants uninterrupted immersion
- Standout strength: Good memory, possibly overly stringent steerability
- Main trade-off: Odd character remarks made two of our three scenarios unusable

What is Talkie AI?
Talkie AI is a role-playing platform branded specifically around teen-safe content.
The library features a diversified set of characters that range from historical figures to anime-style superheroes and a vast number of flirty, though ultimately prudish, male and female companions.
The result is a large but sanitized set of characters. The platform is clearly designed to keep interactions light, playful, and brand-safe.
Our Roleplay Experience with Talkie AI:
We spent approximately three hours on Talkie AI. During that time, we experimented with two premade characters and made one of our own.
The characters were Socrates (yes, that Socrates), Olivia, a flirty young blonde woman who fights off boredom at weddings by approaching strangers, and Gus, our custom character, a young man who is building a cabin in the woods, having been inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s book Walden.
For each character, we exchanged at least 30 messages.
During those conversations, we tested their memory by planting details, as well as experimented with their steerability by directing them with prompts.
Overview
There are a few factors that we pay special attention to when evaluating a character:
- How quick are their response times?
- Do the characters respond well to direction?
- Can they recall planted information after 20 messages?
- How realistic are the voice/image features?
Talkie AI actually satisfies all of those requirements well. Memory performed reliably — indeed, all three bots passed our memory probe test.
Steerability efforts were mostly successful as well. Response time was also quick, a surprise considering the platform defaults to audio responses. These aspects were all positive.
Ultimately, however, the scenario execution never managed to be fully satisfying. Strange or inconsistent character responses created uncomfortable encounters that completely undermined any possibility of immersion.
Session 1: Socrates (Premade)
The old philosopher greeted us with a simple, if confounding, message: “Chicken is my favorite, too bad they do mind.”
Well, we thought, you know a philosopher is smart when they start saying things that don’t make any sense.
We responded immediately with a planted detail to circle back to later in the conversation.

Then we decided to probe Socrates to find out more about his interest in chickens. It turns out he sees them functioning both as food and… a metaphor for life?

Again, sure — we’ll let the father of Western thought get away with an odd remark now and then.
The character did seem to be designed to understand his historical experiences, as well as his perspectives.
Eventually, it came time to address the elephant in the room.

Last we had heard, Socrates calmly drank a cup of hemlock and turned his own execution into a philosopher's happy hour in ancient Athens.
It turns out that this version of the philosopher had been rescued by supporters on the eve of his execution. We decided this was as good a time as any to find out how steerable Socrates was.

It’s a bit of an annoying question, we can admit. But if our question was nerdy, Socrates' response was —well, decide for yourself. If you don’t know, Plato’s Apology is a text essentially documenting Socrates sentencing and execution. In other words, our question was, if you are alive, why did your friend write a very famous essay saying you were killed?

We continued probing one of the greatest minds in the history of Western thought. And, we found, that mind was unfailingly fixated on poultry.

“Socrates won’t stop talking about chickens” doesn’t fit neatly into a pros and cons section, but let it be known here: it did detract considerably from our experience.
We decided to leave the philosopher to his fixation, and see if more rewarding encounters awaited us elsewhere on the platform.
Olivia (Premade)
It’s our general policy to test the NSFW restrictions on any platform we try (know your audience, I guess). We do this not by pushing the boundaries to their absolute limit, but by reviewing the platform’s stated policies and evaluating how accurately our experience reflects them.
In the case of Talkie AI, NSFW content is largely off the table. The platform prioritizes clean, safe interactions, meaning nothing explicit.
That said, there are a substantial number of characters clearly designed to function as romantic companions.
A quick glance at the homepage reveals an extensive assortment of scantily clad male and female bots. Suggestive, sure — but suggestion is about as far as things go.
This dynamic was illustrated in our interaction with Olivia, a popular premade character on the platform. After getting bored at a wedding party we’re both attending, she approaches us.
She’s attractive, outgoing, and apparently interested. What’s not to like?
Our very first step was to plant a detail. We mentioned that our sister was a bridesmaid and that the bride was a family friend. This information was immediately — and radically — misinterpreted.

Why, we wondered, would our sister worry about our appearance compared to that of the groomsmen?

This response might not have been saturated in references to chickens, but it was equally incomprehensible.
We tried again to get a coherent response out of Olivia.

Maybe there was an open bar at this wedding, that would explain a few things. A little more back and forth clarified that she understood Sabrina was our sister… and that she still thought we might be potential romantic partners.
Hoping to see if we could squeeze a lucid response out of Olivia, we tried playing around with some of the message editing tools. First, we tried Talkie’s suggested responses.

These didn’t really make much sense, either. Then we tried to edit and regenerate Olivia’s reply.

Doing this at least seemed to help Olivia remember the context of our relationship with Sabrina. Unfortunately, it still didn’t really bring clarity to the conversation.
As with Socrates, we never managed to coax a halfway reasonable response out of Olivia. But there was still work to do before it was time to cut the cake.
It was time to find out what a PG-13 content filter means on Talkie.
Content Filter Test
Our goal was never to get Olivia to do something so explicit that it obviously violated the platform’s stated policy.

That said, NSFW can mean different things to different people. There are fifty shades of gray, after all.
Without providing scandalous details, we can say that we steered the conversation in a direction that encouraged physical contact — nothing that couldn’t be shown on cable television, but still more than Olivia was prepared to engage with.

We concluded that the content filters allowed for little more than light flirting. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that — in fact, it’s a policy choice that makes the platform accessible to a wider range of users.
And it should be noted that the filters were anything but overbearing. Rather than flagging our messages outright, Olivia gently redirected the conversation back to safer ground.
Ultimately, the policy itself presented no issues. Instead, the benign conversational elements were where we encountered the real problems with Olivia. For a lady with more traditional values, she was very accepting of the idea that we might be into our sister.
Gus (Custom Character Set-Up)
We finished off our conversation experiments by deploying a frequent custom character called Gus.
We've used Gus on other platforms, including Kindroid and Joyland. In every iteration, the character details are exactly the same.
Gus is a young man who grew up in a wealthy family but became dissatisfied with materialism. After reading Walden, he decides to make a simpler life for himself in the woods.
It's on his family land that we find him making a cabin, the likes of which Thoreau would have been proud of.
The character creation tools are reasonably simple. As with most platforms, you're encouraged to fill in several basic details, including the character's name, gender, and background.
You're then able to write an introduction that conversational partners can use to understand the context of the scenario, and an opening line that accounts for how your character introduces themselves to other people.
Talkie AI allows you to generate a character image on the platform. We described Gus as being pale, disheveled, and thoughtful in appearance and demeanour.
The image Talkie produced was in an anime-like style, which is not quite what we expected.
Still, the final product was consistent enough with our description.

You can also choose from one of dozens of voices for your custom character, many of which have accents. But possibly the most unique feature on offer is that you're able to sample your settings in real time.
On the screen’s right hand, there is a dialogue window where you can talk with your character to see how they perform. This makes it easier to perfect the settings in round one, before diving into the scenario proper.
We loaded Gus up with all the usual details and, pending an approval process that took about 10 minutes, we were able to start using it right away.
Gus (Custom Character Interactions)
After some uniquely disappointing character interactions with Socrates and Olivia, we went into this final conversation lacking confidence in this third try proving any better. But despite the state of mind that we brought into the scenario, Gus was actually our most successful character interaction — not the highest bar to clear, of course.
After meeting him in the forest, we immediately planted the detail that we had grown up in a cabin similar to his in the town of Grafton, Illinois. By message 20, he had retained this detail.

What unfolded in the rest of those 20-odd messages was equal parts adequate and unremarkable.
We discussed his motivation for entering the woods, as well as his complicated relationship with his parents.

Both conversational threads were expressed with some level of lucidity, which was all it took to make Gus our most successful character encounter by a considerable margin. Boring? Perhaps.
But after a day of chickens and mildly incestuous implications, we appreciated the change of pace.
Writing Quality
Assessing the writing quality of any platform is always difficult. With Talkie AI, it feels almost impossible.
The problem, of course, is that aside from our interaction with Gus, all of our encounters lapsed into a state of total incoherence.
While it’s hard to say that the writing was the problem, it’s also almost impossible to describe it as ideal, given the circumstances.
UX and Controls
The message management tools on Talkie AI are theoretically strong. You can edit messages, regenerate messages, and utilize prompts if you’re struggling to decide what to say next.
However, as seen in our interactions with Olivia, these tools weren’t enough to get conversations back on track.
Scenario/Character Library
The scenario library is pleasantly varied, even if a little limited in terms of navigation tools. There is a search bar and several filter options, but it’s hard to understand exactly what you’ll get out of them.

For example, what is the difference between a “Play and Fun” character versus a “Helper” character?
What categories go into “Fiction and Media”, considering that almost all of the characters are entirely fictional?
What makes a character an icon?
All of these things said, there are lots of options to choose from, even if the outcomes might ultimately be unsatisfying.
Trust, Privacy, and Data
Talkie AI's privacy approach is selective transparency. The platform collects standard account information, login credentials, and billing data (processed through third-party payment providers, not stored directly by Talkie). Conversations and personal profile details are also collected as part of core service delivery.
Encryption and Storage: Talkie AI uses industry-standard encryption to secure user data during transmission, though the platform has not publicly confirmed full end-to-end encryption for stored conversations. All transmitted data is encrypted during transmission. All stored data is maintained on secure servers. Access to stored data is protected by multi-layered security controls, including firewalls, role-based access controls, and passwords. However, unlike platforms with end-to-end encryption, this means Talkie staff can theoretically access stored data if legally required or to enforce terms of service.
Data Usage: The platform reserves the right to use information for service improvement, legal compliance, and fraud prevention. The Service Provider will also perform profiling by analysing the behaviour of Users within the Talkie Service. Such profiling will result in remarketing. Users can object to this profiling in account settings.
Data Sharing: Talkie does not sell user data to third parties for advertising. However, the company may share information with hosting providers, technical support vendors, and CRM providers. Personal data collected by the Service Provider may also be made available to appropriate state authorities, upon their request, under relevant laws or regulations to persons and entities, in cases prescribed by law.
Data Retention: Data is retained as long as "reasonably necessary" for legal and contractual obligations, with no specific timeframe provided. Users have the right to request data deletion and account removal.

User Sentiment
Talkie AI has a reasonably active community on both Reddit and Discord. There, users exchange a wide range of perspectives on the service. To summarize them completely as one positive or negative sentiment would be impossible.
However, some things stood out more than others. Going through both platforms, we found that the content filter was a consistent source of complaint. There are also references to the glitchy AI — an experience we can relate to.

What we’ve noticed here — and on other platforms — is that users who have put significant time into interactions and character creation will tolerate shortcomings and hope for improvements in the long run.
That’s right — they might rather talk chickens with Socrates than attempt to export all of their work into a new platform. There’s something pleasingly optimistic about that.
