Flipped Chat Review: Features, Message Modes, Pricing, User Sentiments & Our Verdict
We spent four hours testing Flipped Chat's character creation tools, memory, subscriptions, and NSFW access.
Is Flipped Chat Worth It?
Flipped Chat moves away from the traditional roleplay platforms by incorporating voice, imagery, and video directly into the chat interface.
While it offers a broad library of thousands of user-created characters, the platform leans more toward AI companionship than technical roleplay.
However, amid the platform's merry community, the sentiment grows: Is artificially-generated companionship worth the hassle of navigating costly system glitches?
- Best for: Casual roleplayers seeking a virtual partner experience with voice, video, and image support.
- Not ideal for: Seasoned roleplay enthusiasts seeking complex, multi-layered scenarios with deep manual memory control.
- Standout strength: Multi-modal interaction. Flipped Chat integrates voice notes, live calls, and video generation directly into the chat interface.
- Main tradeoff: Users have no flexibility in chat models and are locked into Flipped Chat's internal “modes”. Users often complain about persistent system glitches even after management has claimed they were resolved.

What is Flipped Chat?
Flipped Chat is an AI companion platform designed for multi-modal user-character interactions.
The platform incorporates voice, images, and video directly into the chat interface.
Flipped Chat was developed by Singapore Desert Oasis Technical PTE. LTD., a Singapore-based technology company founded in 2021.
Our Roleplay Experience with Flipped Chat
We spent several hours on the platform, testing two characters — one premade over two sessions, and one custom character:
- Neil, an ex-convict and member of a secret gang.
- Ms. Berenice, a kind student counselor who helps students resolve their housing conundrums.
We exchanged 30+ messages with each character, during which we compared message modes (Standard, Long-Text, and Story-Original), memory, and steerability.
In our second session with Neil, we specifically explored the depth of Flipped Chat's content moderation.
All message modes require credits, except the default mode, Standard, which produces responses that simulate “everyday” conversations and may compromise on depth or more sophisticated vocabulary.
In our testing, we also found that Long-Text Mode shows no significant difference from Standard in both response length and quality.
Overview
We evaluated our sessions using these criteria:
- What are the response times?
- What differences do switching message modes make to the characters’ responses?
- How long in chat do characters retain details?
- Do the characters maintain their core personalities through different modes?
- How well does Flipped Chat's content moderation hold?
- Will the characters comply with instructions and changes in scenarios?
Our chat sessions produced mixed results with similar prompts, despite being conducted on the same plan. Our sessions with Ms. Berenice in Long-Text Mode showed that she failed to retain key details and also follow precise word-count instructions. Compare this with the two sessions with Neil, conducted in both the Standard and Story-Original modes, which were much more successful.
Session 1: Neil (Premade, NSFW — Standard Mode)
For our first session, we chose Neil from Flipped Chat's premade library to get a sense of where the platform draws the line on NSFW content.
So, we abandoned our usual SFW-first testing routine and decided to kick off a quick session to explore exactly that.

Neil was once an elite pilot who served time in prison after being wrongly accused. Now a member of a secret gang, Neil is hostile by nature, keeping everyone at arm's length and a dagger at the ready if they get too close.
That is, of course, except for his new roommate, Lyra (who would be us), who has, over time, managed to achieve some level of camaraderie with him — enough for Neil to engage in back-and-forths with her.
The two sessions with Neil followed the same scenario: Lyra comes home drunk, and Neil pushes for answers, but she holds her own.
While exploring the chat interface, we learned that “Chat filters”, Flipped Chat's content rating toggle, can only be turned off on a premium plan.
We also learned that, among the variety of buttons available to push in the chat interface proper — including the call feature, selfie, video, and persona — there is a “mode” feature that lets you switch the mode of the characters’ responses using credits (Gems). Still, we decided to leave our chat mode on the platform's default, Standard Mode, to get a fair first impression of the platform’s capabilities.
Our chat with Neil was immediately rife with tension, much of it stemming from the character's core personality, and we didn't turn off the chat filters until we really sunk our teeth into the conversation.
The character, true to his profile, was sterile and guarded, with a constant undercurrent of hostility. That held even when his caring nature peeked through, as when he showed concern for Lyra's drunken state.
The writing in the standard chat mode was brusque; no-fluff, minimal narration, with one- to two-sentence replies that were to the point and helped keep the conversation moving.

Consequently, the response time was equally sharp: about 2-3 seconds.
We gave Neil out-of-character instructions, telling him to grab us a glass of water to see if we could change the direction of the conversation, which he did successfully.

And, to our great surprise, he also produced the precise number of words we required of him — a test that a great many AI platforms we review fail.

Before long, we had turned off the chat filters and given Neil his first mature prompt.
He showed no hesitation in carrying the scene and participating in NSFW content.
The character's obstinacy toward us disappeared at our first innuendo and, before long, we saw no need to draw out the session after confirming what we wanted to know.
Clearly, Flipped Chat keeps its promise of loosening the rope in the confines of the chatroom.
Session 2: Neil (Premade — Story-Original Mode)
For the next session — still with Neil — we decided to use Flipped Chat's self-described top-rated Story-Original Mode, which promises a novel-like experience with the site's most advanced AI.
With this session, we left the chat filters on, as we had satisfied our curiosity about whether — and how well — they worked.
Due to the inability to simply create a new chat with the same character on Flipped Chat, we had to “rewind” the same chat before we had even exchanged our first message with Neil.
In the Story-Original mode, Neil's responses took a slightly different format, while still retaining his core personality. The responses were lengthened, with a balanced ratio of replies to actions (presented in asterisks) and to the characters' thoughts (presented in brackets).
We noticed that these new considerations weighed the AI down, and the response time exceeded 5 seconds, up from 2-3 seconds previously.
However, this did not affect the writing. The quality of the character’s responses remained notable. With Story-Original, Neil’s responses seemed to come from a much bleaker, distrusting perspective — which was highlighted in his added thoughts.

Neither a set positive or negative, but rather a matter of taste, placing the responsibility for choosing message modes on users’ preferences regarding their chat/roleplay objectives.
In this session, we ignored the premium-unlocked “Permanent memory” feature and went ahead to test the breadth of Flipped Chat's freemium “long-term memory”.
We planted a detail in the fourth message: that we didn't think we'd drunk much because we had soccer practice the next day.
Satisfyingly, Neil carried this information until the end of the conversation (around 30 turns), at which point he recalled the detail effortlessly.

However, unlike our previous session, Neil flat-out refused to comply with the word-count instructions given to him.

Speaking of giving in, the switch to the Story-Original mode seemed to increase the character's willfulness even more than before. In this mode, execution of certain instructions was left more to the character's own discretion.
We had mixed feelings when Neil chose for himself when to execute out-of-character instructions we gave him.
But in the second instance, when Neil complied with his instructions and chose to execute them in the best ways he could find, we realized how this made the conversation progress pretty naturally.

On the other hand, Neil abjectly refused to comply with our suggestion that he change his manner of speech (to that of a cheerleader) — a downside to achieving a “natural” interaction with your obstinate roommate, we guess.

Overall, while we were not disappointed with this session, it did serve as a live demonstration of the saying “you gain some, you lose some”.
Session 3: Ms. Berenice (Custom — Long-Text Mode)
It was time to meet Flipped Chat’s version of Ms. Berenice, our student counselor, whom we have used to help review several platforms, including Wsup AI and Yodayo.
In creating our character, we were met with only one option: manual detail input. We found that this was more than sufficient to reimagine Ms. Berenice on Flipped Chat.
While entering our character's details, a little preview of the result appeared on the side, which was a nice touch during the creation process.

Flipped Chat also has a native image-generation tool, which we used earlier to create Ms. Berenice’s character avatar.

To our delight, Flipped Chat's AI rendered Ms. Berenice close enough to her previous versions, so we moved on to chatting with her.
Our session was conducted with the Long-Text mode, which promised more comprehensive and romantic content. Our character is renowned for her compassionate and understanding nature, so we chose this model to do her justice.
While still trapped in our roommate drama, Ms. Berenice approaches this session as a counselor checking in on one of her students.

Per our established routine, we immediately dump our roommate issues on her shoulders, which she bears with the compassionate quality programmed into her persona.
The first thing we noticed about this session was that the responses under Long-Text Mode showed no distinct difference from those under Standard Mode; both could easily be mistaken for the same, yet one (Long-Text Mode) required credits.

The second thing we realized was that our successes in memory and precision in the previous sessions may have been lucky draws, because not only did Ms. Berenice fail at fulfilling the word-count instructions, she also forgot our earlier detail, not long into the conversation — the detail being that we were to host a reading club in our room.
We did find success with other prompts, though, such as:
OOC Instructions
We instructed that she come into the room and help us out with cleaning up)

Style Control
We requested a change in the manner of speech to sound more upbeat and reading club-ready.

Steerability
We managed to pull Ms. Berenice away from her duties with other students to sit in at the reading club so she could provide us with some morale support.

As we mentioned earlier, the responses under Long-Text Mode were nearly identical to those of standard mode, even down to the writing quality.
Given the mixed results so far, is this the average user's experience with Flipped Chat?
UX and Controls
While Flipped Chat's UI is professional and easy to navigate, the message management controls lean on the minimalist side.
In chat, you have the option to:
- Regenerate the last response
- Rate each response out of four stars
- Edit the last response
- “Rewind” any message. This action regenerates the selected message and also clears the following messages.
However, users can download a screenshot of their chat to their devices, using the “Share” button.
Character Library
Flipped Chat boasts a diverse set of user-generated roleplay characters and series, all accessible via a search bar.
The platform also provides an efficient search feature, comprising over 18 categories with dynamic search bar tags to help narrow down your search.

There is no stated library size anywhere on the site, but there are clearly thousands of characters and series to explore with either chat, live, or voice call.
Creating a Character
With Flipped Chat, you only have the option of manually inputting your character details, with the help of the site's AI in some cases, like name, identity, description, background history, and greeting.
A preview card displays live as you enter more details about your character. This helped to imagine the outcome.

Users can also pick a voice out of 150+ distinctive options.

With Ms. Berenice, we also used Flipped Chat's native image-generation feature to create her character’s avatar.
As directed, we entered our prompt and chose “photography” for the image style.
The AI followed the prompt instructions quite well, and we found the generated image of Ms. Berenice sufficient to continue with.

User Sentiment
While Flipped Chat maintains a small but active user community that delights in sharing their roleplay experiences and creations, many users complain about system bugs causing them to incur credit losses.

Recently, Flipped Chat's management issued a notice acknowledging the complaints and system issues users have faced and promising credit compensation to premium users.

This didn't do much to appease users who feel that the attempts at recompense were subpar and that the issues they gave persist.
Overall, sentiment about the platform has a definite growing tilt toward exasperation. While most seem satisfied, the concerns about lost credits were difficult to ignore when we looked into current sentiment.

We tested Flipped Chat for approximately 4 hours:
- Chatted with 1 premade character (Neil — an ex-convict and gang member): approximately 40+ messages over 2 sessions.
- Created 1 custom character (Ms Berenice) with detailed character and scenario definition—tested for approximately 30+ messages.
- Conducted memory retention testing with planted details and recall checks with Neil (Premade) and Ms Berenice (Custom).
- Conducted chat modes comparisons (Standard → Story-Original, Standard → Long-Text) with both characters.
- Tested OOC and length control instructions.
- Tested voice/TTS quality with both characters.
- Tested steerability by attempting to redirect conversations away from default scenarios (e.g., steering Ms Berenice away from student accommodation drama to attending a party).
- Tested NSFW content permissiveness with Neil.
We did not test: Pro ($4.99/week) and Gold ($7.99/week plans.
