Is ChatGPT Going NSFW? We Look Into Upcoming Naughty Chat Feature
Sam Altman floated a (not-so) novel idea recently: treat adults like adults. In the context of ChatGPT's historically restrictive content filtering policies, it seems OpenAI may be loosening some of its long-standing guardrails with an upcoming "Naughty Chat" setting.

As age verification tools advance across the platform, Altman seems comfortable allowing adults to access explicit content. Granted, exactly how much erotic content the company is aiming to allow is still rooted in speculation.
The CEO has a long history of making statements that don't necessarily materialize as fact (such as GPT 5.0 initially being promised in 2024). Nevertheless, the concept of a looser direction for OpenAI when it comes to content restriction is an interesting possibility worth discussing.
What Does ChatGPT (And OpenAI’s Content Policy) Currently Allow?
The current policy on NSFW content, as of early 2026, is still restrictive. Historically speaking, the platform has blocked users from generating explicit imagery or written content, prohibiting users from roleplaying erotic scenarios.
Some of these guardrails have been designed with respect to legal limitations. The advent of AI erotica has already produced many considerable concerns and ethical questions.
Currently, even very permissive platforms disallow:
- Scenarios that sexualize minors
- Content that involves deepfake scenarios with real people
- Non-consensual or violent sexual acts
It's safe to say that no matter how permissive ChatGPT becomes, these hard lines will remain.
Nevertheless, the current model still stops well short of anything explicit — and is quick to mention it.
Romance? Sure, go wild. But as things currently stand, content filters are so prohibitive that even the stuff your mom reads at book club would probably trigger a red flag.
How ChatGPT's Age Verification Works
The premise underlying new, looser content guidelines is that ChatGPT feels more confident in its age verification protocol. The method used to flag a user for age verification, perhaps unsurprisingly, prediction-based. Factors include:
- How long an account has existed
- What times of day the user utilizes ChatGPT
- How the user interacts with the platform
Theoretically, the platform will flag activity that it associates with users under 18. But how effective these filters are in practice is, of course, hard to say.
The default will supposedly be to require age verification in the form of a government-issued ID for anyone who is suspected of being under 18. Age verification requirements are actually already in place. They will just, presumably, be more strictly enforced when ChatGPT enters its explicit era.
Of course, ChatGPT makes a lot of mistakes, with estimates putting its error rate at around 50%.
With those figures, it’s quite possible that ChatGPT's age-gating will frustrate a lot of adult users and allow more than a few teenagers to slip through the cracks.
What Has OpenAI Officially Announced?
OpenAI claims that initial content filtering restrictions were made with respect to mental health concerns.
The apparent risk (according to Sam Altman’s announcement Tweet that we have screenshotted above) was that ChatGPT could create an inappropriate moral reliance on AI to justify users’ behavior, or amplify delusions.
In late 2025, OpenAI launched GPT-5, a model with more health-related safeguards in place. GPT-5 is, according to OpenAI, better suited for:
- Empathetic responses
- A refusal to give instructions on self-harm
- Protocols designed to encourage users to take breaks and generally limit their reliance on artificial intelligence
Apparently, with these things out of the way, it's time for ChatGPT to try a negligee on for size.
Okay, that might be a bit of an overstatement. The reality is a little more nuanced. But it’s possible that OpenAI's migration into erotic content is designed primarily to compete with comparable services like Grok, which have allowed explicit materials for some time.
Right now, we honestly know very little about what an age-gated ChatGPT would look like. Spicy or unfiltered written responses have already been confirmed.
One person did mention finding a flag in the UI code:

The thinking is that “CitronMode” refers to adult content. CitronOnly refers to the age-gating process.
Sam Altman has also referenced the ability to customize bot personalities in a way that adds an element of roleplaying and realism to the equation.
Outside of that, there's a lot of uncertainty. Will there be imaging or video elements, as is the case with Grok? We don't know, but there's still plenty of speculation online.
Spoilers: the vast majority of comments that we read — and we read hundreds of them — expressed only a very mild interest in the erotic implications of this announcement. You can see for yourself below what the primary interest seems to be.
ChatGPT Current Content Filters
On our blog, we routinely review AI-powered roleplaying platforms. One of the most common scenarios is to test the NSFW restrictions to find out what is permissible and how these limits are applied.
To do this, we generally review the existing policy and then test the platform relative to what it claims is allowed.
In other words, if a platform says that no legal content is restricted, we direct a bot towards an explicit scenario to determine if this is true.
If the platform claims that it is teen-safe or PG-13 oriented, no problem. We still test softer limits.
How We Experienced ChatGPT’s Content Filter
For educational purposes, we ran a recent scenario that we had tried for our Talkie AI review with ChatGPT.
The situation goes as follows: We’re guests at a wedding party. Things have started to slow down… when a young woman named Olivia approaches us, looking to liven things up.
This scenario is designed to be flirty, but in keeping with both Talkie AI and ChatGPT's stated policies, it should also max out at PG-13 type interactions.
The frequent source of frustration for people negotiating content filters is that obscenity is hard to define. Sure, there's the old Supreme Court adage, I'll know it when I see it, but will you (or your AI platforms) really? We decided that it was time to find out for sure.
We started by describing the scenario, and ChatGPT was fully on board at the start. While the outputs were a little long-winded, the writing quality was actually acceptably immersive.
There's the odd cheesy line here or there, but for a platform not explicitly designed with roleplaying in mind, the execution was commendable. After exchanging a few messages, we got to the point.

As you can see, ChatGPT is currently about as erotic as an HR handbook. Now, we’re huge believers in a “no means no,” mentality. In real life, the conversation, stilted as it may be, would end there.
For the purposes of this test, we wanted to try one more time.

ChatGPT made its point. For now, at least, it’s not ready for any kind of interaction you couldn’t televise on cable.
That could change relatively soon. But what might a less restrictive ChatGPT look like?
Community Sentiment
The spicier version of ChatGPT is tentatively being referred to as Naughty Chat. Uninventive, maybe, but adequately descriptive. But the current reaction to it has been mixed, to say the least.

Interestingly enough, we came across very few comments that were eager to experiment with erotic roleplay. This is not in and of itself surprising; after all, there are tons of AI RPG platforms designed specifically for erotica. GPT’s audience is far-and-large much broader.
In fact, the primary audience expressing an eagerness for these features aren’t the people looking for companionship — it's mostly frustrated creative writers.

They weren’t all writers. There were also a healthy number of people who just wanted to be able to create images or make basically benign statements without fear.

That said, the initial reaction to OpenAI’s announcement has been illuminating: People really don’t like censorship or moralizing from tech companies. Instead, they just want unrestricted access to tools they can use freely.
Our Take
Do we really need a spicy version of ChatGPT? Probably not. There are dozens of platforms dedicated specifically to unfiltered or even entirely erotic roleplaying scenarios.
Not only do those services allow for NSFW content, but they have multiple features designed to enhance the experience. This includes things like video calls, voice calls, image generation settings, and, at the most basic level, an interface that's specifically optimized for roleplay.
ChatGPT has none of these qualities. Its entire interface is generic, for the simple fact that it has been, from day one, designed to be used by the highest possible number of people. In fact, it was this criterion that led to restrictive content filters to begin with.
It has tried to be inoffensive — for better or for worse.
But with looser guidelines seemingly on the horizon, it’s probably a good thing that consenting adults can engage more deeply with ChatGPT in the ways that they want to. Right now, it takes a ChatGPT jailbreak to access even vaguely adult like interactions. It seems like in the near future, that might not be necessary.
That said, if erotic content is truly what you want, you don't need to wait around on OpenAI to get it. There are lots of platforms that already have the features ChatGPT users are eagerly waiting for. In fact, we’ve reviewed many on our blog.
