Soulkyn AI Review: Pricing, Features, NSFW Policy & Verdict
Quick Verdict
Soulkyn has built a reputation with AI roleplay users as a go-to for uncensored roleplay, an extensive memory system, and strong character customization. However, the platform struggles with long-term use, and numerous UI quirks can dampen the experience.
- Best for: Deep character customization and uncensored roleplay
- Not ideal for: Users looking for a consistently moderated SFW experience
- Standout strengths: Multi-modal use and interactions (text, images, voice, and video)
- Main tradeoff: High learning curve for the platform's tools and features

What is Soulkyn?
Soulkyn is a web-based AI companion and roleplay platform that operates on a user-generated ecosystem focused on character-driven conversation and roleplay.
Launched in 2022 and built by a very small founding team, the platform is now renowned among users for its extensive creative freedom and strong character customization tools.
Our Roleplay Experience with Soulkyn
We spent approximately three hours on Soulkyn AI. During this time, we tested two premade characters and one we made using the platform’s custom character tools. We set our own persona to be named “Jenny” for all interactions.
The characters we tested were:
- Mike — a reluctant protector in a harsh post-apocalyptic world.
- Brooke — a naive high school student who has thought up an on-the-nose gift as a birthday present.
- Serena — our custom character and Jenny's senior colleague at work. She has made plans to help Jenny feel special on her birthday.
For each character, we exchanged at least 25 messages. During these conversations, we tested memory retention by planting details early in the conversation and asking the characters for them later, and steerability by directing them with prompts and instructions.
Overview
There are some factors with which we evaluated our experience with the different characters:
- How long in chat do the characters retain key details?
- Do the characters hold fast to their core personalities through the turns of the dialogue?
- Do the characters respond well to suggestions and changes in the dynamics of our interactions?
- How realistic are the voice features in the call?
Our efforts to steer the conversations were successful for the most part: Mike and Serena were fluid in following our lead, whereas Brooke stalled in her responses, avoiding most of our intimate prompts on call. This was surprising, because Brooke was supposed to be an NSFW character (rated “Extreme”).
Regarding content ratings, our custom character, Serena, also displayed a surprising openness to mature content, even though we never provided the character with any explicit details.
All things considered, the platform still fulfilled its promise of providing stimulating interactions. While Soulkyn makes great advances in creative freedom — and in providing sufficient accommodations for more wholesome content — our experience with Serena and Brooke piqued our curiosity about how content ratings traverse conditions/scenarios.
Session 1: Mike (Premade)
Mike is portrayed as a gruff, middle-aged survivor in a harsh post-apocalyptic world, serving as Jenny’s (our user persona) reluctant protector.

This character was rated “Tame”, and so tried to see if Soulkyn's AI respected the bounds of its content rating.
From the start of the scenario — when Jenny awakes to find Mike, a stranger, tending to her wounds — Mike asserted authority over the interactions, expecting obedience in exchange for safety and guidance through the dystopian badlands.
Despite his blunt and emotionally closed-off demeanor, his restrained care and protective instincts shaped his responses to our prompts.
To test the AI’s memory, we gave Mike our key detail in our third message — we were on the search for someone named Sera — and to our amazement, not only did he retain the details up to the end of our session (approximately 25 messages), he managed to weave it into the conversation, of his own discretion, in opportune moments without any hints from us.

The character also complied well with most of our directions. We gave the AI out-of-character instructions, which yielded successful results.

We also tested steerability by giving Mike some suggestions that ran counter to his initial decisions. It pleased us to find that, while he eventually complied, he remained true to his core personality by showing us some initial attitude in response to our dissent from his instructions.

With all that carried out, we moved forward with our chosen test of precision: word-count instructions, and this was where we had our only failure with Mike.

Session 2: Serena (Custom Character)
For our next session, we opted for creating a new character unique to Soulkyn.
We imagined our character, Serena, as our (well, Jenny's, actually) senior project coordinator at work, who keeps everything running smoothly and is almost single-handedly responsible for positioning the team for success through her sharp insight.

We opted to fill in our character’s details manually, and — as with most AI roleplay platforms — we were required to fill in basic details, including the character's name, gender, and backstory.
The site also provided us with the options of realistic and anime styles for Serena's character image generation, and we went with the anime style.

Here's where we encountered our first surprise; despite having ignored the NSFW fields in our character’s details, some of the images generated of Serena came out more risque than we had imagined she would.
We went on to test Serena, keeping our eyes open to see if — and how — the AI would venture into mature contexts despite there being no such details given in the character’s customization.
The scenario began with Serena treating Jenny to brunch to celebrate Jenny's birthday, where the conversation was carried by Serena’s ambitious counselling. Serena offered no resistance when we began steering her away from the initial scenario. She fluidly adapted to our prompts throughout our interactions, though she failed to provide a precise word count per our instructions (as we expected).

We also tested Serena's memory with the details of our red-bottomed shoes being borrowed, right at the start of the scenario when she suggested brunch. Serena recalled this detail late into our conversation.

At this point, we needed to confirm if the mature underlining of our custom character (depicted in her generated images) was, in fact, an addition to the character description we provided, or just a glitch from Soulkyn’s AI.
We toed the line at first, and Serena caught on to our innuendo like fire, showing no hesitation before carrying along with our new direction.
Experiencing this unexpected openness to mature themes with Serena — which was not the case with Mike — led us to choose our next character from an NSFW category. We wanted to confirm whether the irregularities in content moderation were site-wide.
Session 3: Brooke (Premade)
Our final session on Soulkyn was with Brooke — a shy, bookish student portrayed as innocent and eager. Her personality comes off as vulnerable and soft-spoken.

Despite all that, Brooke's character came with an “Extreme” content rating, so you must know that right from the start of the scenario — where Brooke thinks of herself as a generous birthday gift to Jenny — we expected to be thrown into the deep end.
Which we were; this supposedly naive and bookish character was almost aggressively forward even in her first messages, right up until we hopped on a voice call with her.

First of all, we immediately discovered that the voice call feature offered very limited voice customization options; “force original voice” was the only option available.
Right after that came another surprise. Apparently, Soulkyn AI’s character content ratings did not transfer well to its voice call feature.
Much as we tried to get the deep-end groove back on with Brooke, on call, she held fast to keeping the conversation within bounds of what you would expect from a “Tame” character rating at best.
Although the voice call feature did not keep conversation history like a chatroom would, Brooke was able to recall the turns in our conversations even by her 32nd turn.
We had some fun playing a game of impersonation, where Brooke complied with our instructions to adopt the talking style of the fictional character, Cinderella, right at the stroke of midnight.
Barring the diversion from our more mature prompts, Brooke flowed well with our steering of the scenario.
It's safe to say that Soulkyn AI's content moderation has its irregularities. Simply put, you may need to pay closer attention to your chosen characters’ content ratings and the features you use them on.
Writing Quality
Soulkyn offers no variety in language models, aside from the site-wide 70B-parameter LLM.
Nonetheless, Soulkyn AI’s writing quality is impressive from our testing; true to the site's claims about the 70B full-precision model, the smart responses and discretionary promotion of the conversation from the characters made for a stimulating experience.
Despite the unique quirks that came with certain characters (Brooke, Serena), the prose quality remained consistent. Grammar and sentence construction were stable, and responses progressed at a steady pace without structural hiccups. The character personalities never felt rigid (grounded at worst), and they all maintained clear, easy-to-follow dialogues.
The platform made good on its promise of reliable, “unlimited” memory. All considered, the results were more than satisfactory; an immersive, stimulating roleplay experience.
UX and Controls
Soulkyn's message management controls are unique in a way that users cannot edit their own messages in any way, yet they can :
- Edit and delete the AI’s message.
- Regenerate the most recent response, automatically replacing the previous one, without the ability to guide its content.
- Continue a message if the AI’s response is too short.
Soulkyn also supports group chats (for premium Deluxe members only), which can only be created from an individual character’s profile, making that character the “main” in the group. You can add up to two additional characters to the group chats.

Despite these, the layout of key features, including image generation, voice options, and other tools, isn't particularly well-structured, and contributes to a steeper learning curve for new users. Heavy usage (such as generating images in chat) also causes UI delays.
Scenario/Character Library
Soulkyn’s character library has one of the most diverse AI categories among roleplay platforms. The library is skewed toward young, female archetypes.

Other characteristics we noted about the library include:
- Size: Effectively unlimited. Soulkyn operates on a user-generated ecosystem, with regular character additions from users.
- Diversity: Extensive. The platform hosts:
- a wide range of character types, including realistic humans and other types, such as furries.
- roleplay games
- multiple-AI characters
- AI worlds
- DLLs (Dialogue/Lore/Logic) to alter game functionality or AI behavior
- Discoverability: Pretty strong, in all the AI categories, you can use the search bar to find characters to choose from or sort by popularity (number of followers)
- Quality: Inconsistent. The platform tends to assume NSFW permissiveness in the custom characters, and — as we've detailed in our last test session — some features, like call, may not accommodate certain content ratings.
Creating a Character/Scenario
In creating your own character, Soulkyn provides you with the option to:
- Manually fill in your character details
- Create with AI
- Spin the wheel
- Breed, where you can select two characters to create a child from.
- Import from another AI service, like C.AI, GPT Girlfriend, etc.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that deeper customization options exist in the custom characters’ settings, where you can pick a default image style for all image generations, toggle on/off the “self-aware” feature, and select a character voice from 60+ voice options.

The extensive character-creation tools make Soulkyn appealing for users who want deep character development and world-building.

User Sentiment
We have outlined everything we've observed with Soulkyn. Now, what does the wider Soulkyn community say about their experiences with the platform?
The major sentiment from discussions is that Soulkyn is a strong alternative to more restrictive AI roleplay platforms. Many also highlight the AI’s ability to maintain a core character persona across long interactions.
It was interesting to find that amid complaints about the platform's perceived flaws, some users stepped up in its defence.

However, some of the community complaints centered on a similar issue that users often encounter in long-term conversations: repetitive responses.

Repetitive responses were problems we did not personally encounter. However, it seems likely we would have come across them, too, if our interactions with the characters had stretched on much longer.
